A Sudanese doctor who traveled to Iowa City several times a year to perform surgeries has died due to the conflict in his country.

Mercy Iowa City confirmed at Dr. Bushra Sulieman was killed Tuesday in Khartoum, Sudan. CNN reported that Sulieman died from fatal stab wounds in front of his home.

Mercy Iowa City President and CEO Tom Clancy said in a release that Sulieman was a well-respected gastroenterologist, surgeon and colleague who will be greatly missed.  He was director of the Sudanese American Medical Association.

Conflict in Sudan that started earlier this month has led to the death of over 400 people, with over 3700 injured. The United States evacuated the embassy and officials are urging remaining Americans in the country to do the same.
