The mother of a former U I student who she allegedly helped escape the country while he was on house arrest ahead of an attempted murder trial is asking for a reduction in her bond while being held in custody.

Newly filed court records show 19 year-old Ali Younes was supposed to go on trial after allegedly attacking a woman near the UI Art Building West in April 2022 , then stealing her $20,000 earrings after he thought she was dead. Authorities believe Younes used Jordanian travel documents to board a  Chicago O’Hare flight to that country.

Lima Younes, his mother, is accused of helping her son flee the country. She is being held on $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned June 12th.  Younes’ father, Alfred, was also arrested for the same offense. He is in Omaha, awaiting extradition to Iowa City.
