Three local high schools have been recognized by the state of Iowa for their high voter registration numbers among eligible students.

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has announced the 19 Iowa schools that qualified for the Carrie Chapman Catt Award this school year. The award goes to schools that register at least 90 percent of their eligible students to vote. More than 2,600 high school students registered this year in conjunction with the Catt Award initiative.

Locally, Lone Tree was the only area high school to earn the award, with over 90% of its eligible students registered to vote.

Hillcrest Academy in Kalona will earn a special banner after at least 70% of its eligible students became registered, while Regina High School will receive a special certificate after over 50% of its eligible students became registered.

The Carrie Chapman Catt Award is named after a famous Iowa native who was instrumental in securing passage of the 19th Amendment, granting women access to the ballot box more than 100 years ago.
