Iowa City Police say a transient threatened to stab staff members at a convenience store, then resisted arrest.

The ICPD Daily Activity Log indicates officers were called to Kwik Star on Keokuk Street just after 9:15 Sunday night for a subject loitering in the parking lot with a shopping cart. Staff told the subject to leave, but he reportedly responded by threatening to cut and/or stab them.

Arriving officers say they found the suspect, identified as 58-year-old Mark Staley, next door at Southside Liquor. When told he was under arrest, Staley allegedly tensed up and shifted his body weight to keep from being loaded into the squad car.

Staley was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Interference With Official Acts. He pleaded guilty on Monday and was given credit for time served with one day in jail.

Staley was given a suspended sentence earlier this month after assaulting a resident of Cross Park Place with a baseball bat last March. He was fined $105 last year after police say he fought with another subject at the same address while armed with a butcher’s knife.
