Iowa Democrats have approved a Monday, January 15th, 2024 in-person caucus date.

Democratic leaders say holding the caucuses on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day would alleviate some of the accessibility issues for those who were unable to attend in the past due to work or school obligations.

Iowa Democrats had been trying to find a date that appeased both the national party’s decree that Iowa would no longer hold first-in-the-nation status due to the state’s lack of ethnic diversity and state law that limits the date when it could be held.

Saturday’s vote lines up the Democratic caucuses with the Republican caucuses, as the GOP approved the same date back in July.

The Democratic plan also allows voters to mail in a “presidential preference” card within a 14-day window, although details of that plan are still being worked out.
