An Iowa City man recently evicted from a South Riverside Drive residence has been charged with theft after he allegedly took furnishings with him.

According to the criminal complaint, 20-year-old Gabriel Brown signed a rental agreement in June for the residence, but was evicted in August.  Police say when Brown left, he removed various furniture and housing items listed on the signed agreement that belonged to the unit.

The value of the taken items was over $2100.

The landlord confirmed that the items were in the residence during a maintenance visit two months prior, but were missing upon the eviction date of August 25th.

A warrant for Brown’s arrest was issued on September 12th; he was taken into custody Monday morning. He’s been charged with 2nd degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.

Brown was released on his own recognizance later that day, with a public defender appointed to him.
