The Iowa City Police Department is warning the public about a sophisticated scam involving perpetrators posing as law enforcement and demanding payment.

According to a release from the City, the scam entails a perpetrator contacting victims using an app making it appear on the victim’s phone that the call is coming from an official entity. The perpetrator – using the names of actual law enforcement officers – then demands payment for outstanding debts. In most cases, the scammer arranges to meet the victim to receive cash or arranges for the victim to send money electronically.

The police department reminds the public that no law enforcement agency will contact someone directly and demand money. If you receive a phone call like this, please hang up immediately.

This incident is being actively investigated by the Iowa City Police Department.  Anyone with information is asked to contact them at 319-356-5275. In addition, anyone with security camera footage that could potentially help the ICPD in their investigation is asked to share it with the Department.

Residents can also use Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers, who are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information about this incident that leads to an arrest. Crime Stoppers tips can be submitted via the P3 Tips app, online at iccrimestoppers.org, or by phone at 319-358-TIPS (8477).

All tips and calls are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed. Individuals providing information are not required to reveal their identity to collect a reward.

Cedar Rapids police report a different phone scam.

This week, they’ve heard of a proliferation of calls to the elderly, with callers claiming to be law enforcement demanding money to get their out-of-town grandchildren out of trouble. One of the victims this week lost over $10,000 to the scam.

Authorities are suggesting that you hang up and call the grandchild or family member directly to verify the claims. Families are also urged to talk with older parents and grandparents to explain how this scam works so they don’t get duped. Anyone who feels they or a family member have been scanned is asked to call Cedar Rapids Police at 319-286-5491.
