Shelter House resident facing numerous charges after allegedly driving while intoxicated

A Shelter House resident faces a litany of charges after an incident Wednesday night at the facility, starting with him allegedly driving while intoxicated.

Officers were called to the intersection of Highway 6 and Broadway Street at around 9:20pm and came upon 66-year-old Herbert Walton, who showed signs of impairment and was arrested for OWI third offense.  Police say he was operating his vehicle on a suspended driver’s license, had an open container of alcohol, no insurance, no visible license plates, and the vehicle wasn’t registered. Walton allegedly refused to sign his citations.

A search of Walton after he entered the Johnson County Jail reportedly turned up a quantity of marijuana.

Walton was charged with OWI third offense, marijuana possession, possession of contraband In a correctional facility, driving while suspended, operating a non-registered vehicle, failure to provide financial responsibility, open container, and failure to display license plates.  He could be sentenced to up to 11 years in prison if convicted on the felony and misdemeanor charges.
