Cedar Rapids man charged with vehicular homicide after pedestrian death

A Cedar Rapids man has been arrested for driving while intoxicated and killing a pedestrian Sunday.

According to a release from the city’s Police Department, 45-year-old Kyle Kubite was driving on the 1400 block of Memorial Drive SE at approximately 4:45pm when his vehicle struck two pedestrians, one adult female and one adult male.    Both were transported to a local hospital.  The female pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The male pedestrian received non-life-threatening injuries.  ​Kubite was uninjured.

Investigators determined ​Kubite was driving under the influence. He was taken to the Linn County Correctional Center and faces charges including:

Homicide by Vehicle- OWI; OWI 1st offense; Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident; and Leaving the scene of a fatality accident. The vehicular homicide charge comes with a prison sentence of up to 25 years if convicted.

The identity of the female victim is being withheld at this time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
