An Iowa City man who allegedly drove drunk, eluded police and then hid in his apartment to avoid arrest faces numerous charges.

At approximately 12:25 am Saturday, 44-year-old Lukelelo Msbengi of Spring Ridge was reportedly driving in the turn lane on Mormon Trak Boulevard near West Side Drive. A traffic stop was attempted, but Msbengi allegedly failed to stop and continued driving. The officer terminated the pursuit and later located Msbengi at his apartment.

He reportedly hid in a room with the door locked, and ignored multiple orders to come out of the room. Officers eventually pushed the door down and located Msbengi hiding inside.

Upon contact, he allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol and bloodshot watery eyes.  A PBT showed his BAC over the legal limit.

Msbengi was charged with OWI 2nd offense, Eluding, Interference with Official Acts, and Driving While Revoked.  If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over 4 years in jail.
