Police arrest Burlington man for his role in New Year’s Day Ped Mall fight

A Burlington Iowa man has been arrested for his role in a New Year’s morning fight on Iowa City’s Ped Mall.

According to police, the male victim was walking through the Ped Mall on College Street at approximately 12:20am, passing 20-year-old Tarvais Conard and another suspect. A verbal altercation reportedly ensued. Video footage from the scene allegedly shows the other suspect, previously identified as 25-year-old Olijuan Abraham of Bettendorf, punched the man in the face and knocked him to the ground.  It also reportedly shows Conard approached the victim and kicked him in the head.

Abraham allegedly kicked the victim in the face as he was trying to get up.

The man suffered a broken nose, a cut to his chin that required stitches, a cut on the inside of his mouth, and various scrape marks on his body.

The surveillance video reportedly shows a third suspect who also assaulted the victim.

Conard was identified by multiple law enforcement officers who recognized him on the night of the assault.

A warrant was issued, and Conard was arrested Monday. He’s been charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Participation in a Riot.  He could be sentenced to up to six years in prison if convicted. Abraham was arrested on February 9th and could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison if convicted on charges of Participating in a Riot and Willful Injury causing Bodily Injury.
