A fire on the 1200 block of N Street SW in Cedar Rapids Tuesday resulted in a fatality and three injuries.

Firefighters were dispatched to the single story home just after 10am on reports of a fire with people still inside the structure. When crews arrived, they were met by heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the home.

Police officers had already removed one victim from the home; as firefighters began extinguishing the fire they quickly located and removed a second victim.

The two men were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The city announced Wednesday in a release that 78-year-old Frederick Slagenweit of Cedar Rapids passed away from his injuries. The other male, believed to be approximately 50 years old, is recovering from non life-threatening injuries.

It was also announced that two Cedar Rapids Police officers were treated and released later in the day.

The home had heavy fire damage to the first floor and smoke damage throughout.  No damage estimates are available, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
