A brush fire escalated and destroyed a Cedar Rapids residential garage Friday.
Crews were dispatched a little after 1:30 pm to the 700 block of 1st Av SE on reports of a brush fire, which was upgraded to a structure fire involving a detached garage. Upon arrival, they found the garage fully engulfed.
Fire Department personnel deployed hoses to protect the nearby house and a small pull-behind camper near the garage. Several explosions occurred as the fire was put out, believed to be caused by propane cylinders.
The house and camper suffered minor heat damage, but the garage and an adjacent small shed were a total loss.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
