The Iowa Department of Public Safety has released the name of the weekend victim who was shot by Cedar Rapids Police.

In its initial release, the incident occurred just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday.  Cedar Rapids Police received a 911 call from a suspect, now identified as 40-year-old David Vanderhamm of Cedar Rapids, who requested an officer respond to his residence.  A second 911 call came in from a male bystander, asking for a welfare check due to Vanderhamm being armed and making homicidal and suicidal statements.

Arriving officers observed a weapon in Vanderhamm’s hands, and ordered him to drop it to the ground.  Instead, he raised the weapon in the officers’ direction. Three officers opened fire at Vanderhamm, who was struck and fell to the ground.

Emergency responders were called in, but Vanderhamm died at the scene. The male bystander was also hit and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.

The state Department of Criminal Safety’s Special Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, and the three officers involved in the shooting are on leave pending completion of the investigation.
