With parking demand at its highest ever, now is not the time to raise rates on permits and tickets on the University of Iowa campus.
That’s what students are saying ahead of today’s Board of Regents meeting where the proposal will be considered.
The Daily Iowan reports the U wants an average hike of $9 for all parking tickets issued on campus to go into effect this fall. They also want to raise parking permit rates by an average of $2.30 for faculty and $1.50 for students.
April Wells is the university’s Parking and Transportation Communications Manager. She tells the DI that unlike other departments on campus that are funded by state tax money, her department is entirely funded through revenue generated by the services and fees the department provides. It operates Cambus, Commuter Programs, Fleet Services, Facility Operations, and Parking Services.
Wells added that this is the first time the UI has requested increased parking rates in nine years. She also said it is the first time in 12 years the department has asked for citation rate increases.
To address the high demand for parking, the Regents approved construction of a new parking ramp in February with up to 1200 spaces on the west side of campus. Officials say they’ll begin that project once a new ramp near Kinnick Stadium is completed by no later than early next year.
