The Iowa City Community School District will be meeting in special session Tuesday to select a new school board member.

The Press-Citizen reports that the appointment will fill a space vacated when JP Claussen resigned to take a teaching position in the District.

The candidates were given a chance to meet with the Board on June 3rd to discuss their qualifications and priorities. The list was announced Thursday and includes seven candidates: Tim Borchardt, Robert Decker, Shawn Eyestone, Timothy Fairbanks, Bob Gibson, William Kockneff, and Heather Magallanes.

Each candidate either has children currently enrolled in the District, have previously served in some capacity in the school system, or both.  The selected applicant will begin serving at the Board’s June 25th meeting and continue until November 2025, when Claussen’s term would have expired.
