Clean energy initiatives in Iowa in danger under new federal budget

Iowa stands to lose clean energy jobs, manufacturing facilities, infrastructure expansion and more if the current federal reconciliation bill passes as is.

Iowa Capital Dispatch reports nearly three-fifths of Iowa’s total electricity generation comes from renewable sources, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which also reports Iowa is one of the top states for solar and wind energy generation. Since 2019, Iowa has generated more electricity via wind than from coal and continues to grow its solar production.

A media conference with Climate Action last week featured Kristina Costa, who worked at the White House during the Biden Administration. She implemented the Inflation Reduction Act’s energy and climate policies, and said the new budget bill essentially repeals those policies. Costa said project developers will face uncertainty, as it places restrictions on credits for clean electricity production, zero-emission nuclear energy production and other sectors.

The House version of the bill also terminates credits for clean vehicles, residential energy efficiency, and hydrogen fuel.

The Nature Conservancy estimates those cuts and other Trump administration policies will result in a reduction of $238 million in annual economic value to Iowa through 2032.
