A Lee County man is accused of assaulting a victim in downtown Iowa City early Saturday morning, causing a head wound.
Iowa City Police were called to an assault outside the former Freddie’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers at the Old Capitol Town Center just after 2:30 a.m. A male victim had a head wound that was bleeding profusely. The alleged perpetrator, 44-year-old Charles Smith of Keokuk, stated the injured man had gotten into his face during an argument over alcohol. Smith allegedly told police he pushed the other man away from him, causing him to fall and strike the back of his head.
Smith reportedly admitted to being drunk, showed signs of intoxication, and refused breath testing. He was arrested and charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
