Iowa City man charged after allegedly hitting woman and threatening to kill her

An Iowa City man was arrested after allegedly assaulting and threatening a woman.

Police say the incident occurred Thursday evening. According to the arrest report, 43-year-old Phillip Chavis struck the woman in the face on the sidewalk near their Benton Street apartment. They reportedly went inside, where the victim sat on a couch.

Chavis then reportedly picked up a box fan and hit the woman approximately five times with the fan. He also allegedly punched her in the shoulder and thigh. Police said she suffered swelling, had a small cut on her upper lip, and was limping. The woman also stated that during the altercation, Chavis threatened to kill her.

Chaavis was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing injury and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted on both counts, he faces a prison sentence of up to three years.
