A Tiffin man who was found guilty of stealing and reselling construction and medical equipment during the construction of the University of Iowa’s North Liberty campus got a deferred judgment and probation from a Johnson County District Court judge.

58-year-old Kevin Grimm pleaded guilty in March to 1st degree theft in a plea agreement. He paid over $72,000 in restitution before Monday’s sentencing.

The criminal complaint says Grimm was a foreman for contractor JE Dunn and stole over $60,000 worth of construction and medical equipment, reselling hundreds of items on eBay and Facebook Marketplace during the first five months of 2025.

The Gazette reports Assistant Johnson County Attorney Jeff Brunelle recommended a 10 year suspended sentence and two years probation. He argued against the deferred judgment because the estimated loss to UI Health Care was over $100,000. He also said there was no indication Grimm was going to stop stealing and reselling hospital items to third party marketplaces

6th Judicial District Judge Ian Thornhill granted a ten-year suspended sentence with four years probation. If Grimm successfully completes probation he can ask for his record on this case be expunged. Thornhill noted that Grimm cooperated with authorities, pled guilty to his crimes, and was willing to make restitution.
