A Shelter House resident is in custody after attempting an overnight burglary.
Police say 56–year-old Harold Blakey attempted to break in to a vehicle at the Hilltop Mobile Home Community on Waterfront Drive at around 2:50am Tuesday. He attempted to steal the stereo system, then proceeded to break inside the residence where he had several metal tools and a flashlight with him.
Blakey reportedly used several tools to open doors, and a member of the household located him standing outside their bedroom door with a flashlight. Blakey then retreated to a bathroom and closed the door.
He allegedly broke several items inside the bathroom trying to find an exit. When police arrived, Blakey had reportedly stolen a watch from the residence worth about $300.
Damage to the residence caused by Blakey was approximately $1000.
Blakey was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, 4th degree Theft, Possession of Burglar’s Tools ,3rd degree burglary of a motor vehicle, and 3rd degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all counts, he faces a possible prison sentence of 17 years.
