A Coralville man faces several charges after allegedly stealing a knife from a convenience store and using it to commit an assault.
The incident occurred just after 4am Sunday at the Casey’s on Commerce Drive. According to the criminal complaint, 22-year-old Davis Echolas of Holiday Road entered the kitchen of the store and took a knife with a blade measuring approximately 8 1/2 inches, then passed all points of sale without attempting to pay for it.
Echolas then allegedly held the knife in the face of an individual, and hit the victim multiple times with the blade.
Police came into contact with Echolas, and he reportedly showed signs of intoxication.
Echolas was also allegedly identified as the driver of a 2012 Nissan that was in the parking lot of the store. He reportedly admitted to drinking, and an open container of alcohol was discovered in the vehicle.
A check of Echolas’ driving record showed his driving status as barred.
Echolas is charged with 5th degree theft, public intoxication, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, Operating While Intoxicated first offense, and driving while barred. If convicted on all counts, he faces a possible prison term of over three years.
