Iowa City Police have arrested a man they say led them on a high-speed chase last month.
44-year-old Terrance Watkins of Maggard Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 11:00 Monday night. Police say an officer attempted a traffic stop on Watkins’ 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee just after 3:15 on the afternoon of June 13th. Watkins had a suspended license, and had been observed driving southbound on Taylor Drive. The officer found Watkins near the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Miami Drive and activated his lights and siren. Watkins reportedly accelerated to a high rate of speed and blew through stop signs at Grantwood Drive and California Avenue and California Avenue and Sycamore Street. Witnesses say he almost struck a vehicle while making a wide turn from California onto Sycamore.
Watkins is charged with Felony Eluding, Diving While Suspended, and Reckless Driving. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
