Trial has been delayed by nearly two months for a North Liberty man accused of intentionally causing a crash with a police cruiser.

Steven Myers, Jr., of the Golfview mobile home court, was to stand trial next month. But during a case management conference on Friday, a judge granted a continuance in the case, pushing trial to Oct. 2. Another case management conference is scheduled for Aug. 31.

The 29-year-old is accused of leading a roughly half-hour chase after he refused to stop for an officer on Highway 965 near Hawkeye Drive the night of March 18. Myers’ was allegedly clocked traveling upwards of 115 miles per hour on 55-mile-per-hour roads.

When an officer laid down stop sticks on Highway 6 near Kent Park, Myers is accused of driving at the officer only to swerve at the last moment. Shortly thereafter, Myers allegedly slammed on his brakes while a squad car was in close pursuit, causing the officer to rear-end Myers’ Pontiac Sunfire.

Myers then took off again and police called off the chase. However, police say they identified Myers as a suspect and arrested him in May, finding a baggie of methamphetamine during a search of his vehicle.

Myers faces charges of Felonious Eluding, 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations While Using a Weapon, 1st Offense Possession of a Controlled Substance, and numerous traffic violations. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to more than 16 years in prison.
