A Mount Pleasant man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon for allegedly driving drunk to a doctor’s appointment.

Arrest records indicate that 53-year-old William Wilson of North Jackson Street arrived at the Mercy Specialty Clinics on Northgate Drive in Iowa City for an appointment and staff reported smelling alcohol on his person after seeing him exiting his vehicle and checking in.

Officers arrived and Wilson was pointed out in the waiting room. They noted Wilson’s poor balance, red watery eyes and slurred speech as well as the odor of consumed alcohol.

A PBT showed a blood alcohol content over the legal limit, and a Datamaster showed a reading of .214 less than an hour later.

Wilson was taken into custody and charged with OWI first offense, a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison if convicted.
