An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after University of Iowa Police say he committed multiple thefts on campus.

Security video from the UI Campus Recreation and Wellness Center taken on Saturday night allegedly shows 18-year-old Muhammad Simpson taking $220 in cash out of a wallet while the victim was playing basketball. Another video allegedly shows Simpson taking a pair of jeans and a belt from the bleachers of the UI Fieldhouse on the night of May 13th.

Yet another security video allegedly shows Simpson burglarizing a residence on the 400 block of South Dodge Street on the night of May 8th. The residents told Iowa City Police they noticed some things in the apartment appeared to have been moved around. When they looked at surveillance footage, they saw a man matching Simpson’s description walk through the apartment and rifle through clothes on a chair before exiting through a window. Nothing was found missing, but damage to the window screen was estimated at $50.

Simpson, who lists addresses on Taylor Drive and Broadway Street, was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 7:30 Tuesday night and charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, 5th Degree Criminal Mischief and two counts of 4th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over seven years in prison.
