Iowa City Police had an easy time identifying a theft suspect who gave them a fake name over the weekend after they discovered his real name tattooed on his arm.

Officers were investigating a theft at the Waterfront Hy-Vee just after 6am Sunday when they tracked the suspect, 40-year-old Larry Hook of Waterway Drive, to the 500 block of Olympic Court. Police say Hook continued to identify himself as “Joe” or “Joseph Cole”.

Investigators noticed as they were handcuffing him that Hook had the name “Larry” tattooed on his forearm. A check of his Iowa ID card revealed his real identity.

Hook is charged with Providing False Identity Information. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail.
