A Keystone Iowa man who described himself as “the designated driver guy” apparently didn’t do his job very well; he was arrested for OWI early Saturday.

According to police, 22-year-old Colter Pickering was stopped at approximately 1:07am at Madison and Washington Streets for disobeying a no-right-turn sign. Officers reportedly noticed Pickering had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, and smelled of ingested alcohol.

Pickering allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol, but told officers that he limited his intake because he was “the designated driver guy.”  A field sobriety test showed that he didn’t limit his intake enough; a subsequent Datamaster test showed his blood alcohol level at .171, more than twice the legal limit.

To further complicate matters, Pickering had a loaded Glock pistol and a spare magazine in a storage area on the dash. He has a permit to carry from Benton County, but it’s invalid if intoxicated.

Pickering was taken into custody and charged with first offense OWI and Possession or Carrying of Dangerous Weapons while Intoxicated. If convicted on both offenses, he could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
