An Iowa City man who reportedly had trouble holding himself up while visiting a convenience store was arrested after leaving the scene in his vehicle.

Police responded to the Kum and Go on Mormon Trek Boulevard Thursday around 12:30 for reports of an intoxicated male in the store. It was reported that 59-year-old Jimmie Brosam of Burry Drive was having trouble walking and needed assistance to hold himself up.

Brosam allegedly left the store and got into his Jeep and left southbound on Mormon Trek. Officers caught up with him at the corner of Abbey and Burrey Drive as he was pulling into his garage. Brosam reportedly almost hit the side of the garage when pulling in and did hit items inside the garage.

Officers noted Brosam’s slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and poor balance. He failed testing and was unable to perform other tests. A PBT showed his blood-alcohol level over the legal limit.

Brosam was arrested and charged with his first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
