A West Liberty man allegedly proclaiming himself to be “the biggest drug dealer in Iowa City” was arrested last week after getting kicked out of Panchero’s.

Iowa City Police were flagged down by employees of the South Clinton Street restaurant just after 2am last Wednesday morning for a subject who was drunk, cursing, threatening staff and throwing money.

The man in question, 28-year-old Gonzalo Cruz-Montelongo of West 5th Street, was located outside the restaurant. He allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, was wearing bar wristbands, had slurred speech, and smelled of ingested alcohol. Police say Cruz-Montelongo refused to identify himself and was placed under arrest.

A search of Cruz-Montelongo’s person turned up his wallet, which helped officers determine his name and address. He allegedly refused breath testing and shouted obscenities and racial slurs. Cruz-Montelongo also allegedly referred to himself as “the biggest drug dealer in Iowa City”. He later retracted that statement.

Cruz-Montelongo was charged with Public Intoxication and Harassment of a Public Official.  If convicted, he faces a maximum of 60 days in jail.
