An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after attempting to break into a Court Street apartment.
Police say that 41-year-old Paul Hagerman of South Dubuque Street attempted to enter the apartment on Sunday around 5:30pm by breaking off the door handle and use it as a wedge. He also is accused of kicking the door several times.
When officers arrived, Hagerman is said to have fled and was located in the basement of the building. When interviewed by police, Hagerman allegedly said he attempted to break the door to the apartment down because he believed someone was inside “doing harm.” He stated that he also tried to shove the door open during his attempt to enter the residence.
When asked what he would have done if confronted by the resident, he reportedly said that he would have defended himself.
Hagerman had no lawful purpose to enter the apartment, and did not know the residents of the apartment. He was taken into custody and charged with 3rd degree attempted burglary, 5th degree criminal mischief, and public intoxication. If convicted on all charges, Hagerman could be sentenced to over two years in prison.
