IC man accused of stealing from grandmother

An Iowa City man is in custody after allegedly stealing cash and possessions from his grandmother.
Police were dispatched to the 2200 block of Taylor Drive on Saturday afternoon on reports of a theft that occured the day before. The victim reports that her grandson, 18-year-old Darnell Williams, had taken her purse, containing approximately $470 in cash, her IDs and cellphone.
The next day, WIlliams reportedly contacted family members and told them he was at Coral Ridge Mall. They went there and recovered the stolen cellphone, but when asked for the cash, WIlliams allegedly said that he had spent it on a necklace at the mall.
Police came in contact with Williams and Mirandized him, after which he said that he had spent the cash. The grandmother stated that she was able to locate her purse, ID and other documents in the area of the Villa Gardens apartments.
Williams was booked into the Johnson County Jailand charged wtih 3rd degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison term of up to two years if convicted.
