Throwing a urine-soaked sandwich at a guard has led to a felony assault charge against a Johnson County Jail inmate.

According to online records, 26-year-old Diana Rivera of the Hilltop manufactured housing community threw the sandwich through the food hatch in her cell just after 6:15 Wednesday night, striking a jail staff member in the leg and waist. The sandwich splashed liquid that smelled like urine on the staff member’s pants.

A later look at video surveillance footage showed Rivera appearing to use the toilet without flushing shortly before the incident, including hovering over the toilet seat.
Rivera is charged with Assault By An Inmate With Bodily Fluids or Secretions, a Class D felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.

Rivera was arrested on March 29th after allegedly attacking an Iowa City Transit driver, a bus passenger and a police officer with an ice scraper while the bus was parked at The Quarters on Highway 6 East. She also allegedly broke one of the bus’s doors. Rivera was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all of those charges, she faces a maximum of nine years in prison.
