An Iowa City resident faces several charges stemming from an alleged trespass incident at the municipal airport Monday.

Police say 39-year old James Drain of Shelter House was allegedly on airport property at approximately 2:25pm. He was observed jumping the fence and trying to jump on a plane.

Arriving officers found Drain walking northbound near the river. He was asked to stop, but continued to walk away. One of the officers made contact with Drain and asked him to walk out of the wooded area, but he continued to walk back. After multiple commands to come out, Drain reportedly began to walk towards the officer. He asked Drain to turn around, and that’s when he’s accused of grabbing and punching at the officer. During the ensuing altercation, Drain attempted to remove the officer’s firearm as he was being taken to the ground.

The arrest report indicates that Drain was able to get the hood of the holster down, and knocked the officer’s radio off during the fight.  The officer stated that he sustained bodily injury during the incident.

Drain was taken into custody and charged with Disarming a Police Officer, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Bodily Injury, Removing a Radio from an Officer causing Bodily Injury, and Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on all counts, Drain could be sentenced to up to nine years in prison.
