The Iowa City Community School District announced Tuesday that Assistant Superintendent Matt Degner has been named Interim Superintendent.
The appointment goes into effect July 1st, as current Superintendent Stephen Murley moves on to take a job with the Green Bay Wisconsin Area Public School District effective the same day.
Board directors voted Degner to the position unanimously at their meeting Tuesday.
Degner has been with the District for seven years and has been assistant superintendent the last four. He graduated from UNI and got his Masters and Educational Specialist degrees from the University of Iowa.
Degner will take over during a challenging time, as the District works out how they will reopen brick-and-mortar schools in the fall, and how to pick up on the lesson plans. Currently, online education is offered, but it is voluntary and no grades are given.
The ICCSD Board of Directors plans to conduct a national search to fill the Superintendent role permanently.
