CR armed robbery suspects arrested

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – October 1, 2020 –  Two suspects are in custody following an armed robbery on Wednesday evening. Cedar Rapids police officers were dispatched to Point Liquor and Tobacco, 3221 Center Point Road NE, at 8:21 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30 for an armed robbery. The clerk advised that a young male suspect entered the store with his face covered, displayed a handgun, and robbed the clerk of money in the cash register. The suspect felt on foot to the north of the store.

Police officers and investigators were able to review surveillance footage located from the area and identify a suspect vehicle that the armed robbery suspect entered on the passenger side. Investigators also were able to get a description of the driver and a partial description of the license plate from the surveillance video.

Investigators were able to ascertain the name of the registered owner of the vehicle and subsequently located the vehicle in an apartment parking lot in the 1600 block of Park Towne Court NE. Investigators conducted surveillance and later witnessed an individual that matched the suspect description of the get-away driver from the armed robbery. A traffic stop was initiated and the suspect, identified as Dekheary V. Steele, DOB/05-01-1992, age 28, of Chicago, Illinois, was taken into custody and brought to the Police Station for questioning. Steele admitted to his involvement in the liquor store robbery.

The investigation also determined that the other suspect involved in the robbery was still inside an apartment in the 1600 block of Park Towne Court NE. Officers were able to take a 14-year old male, identified as Treyton Alan Spies, DOB/01-21-2006, into custody. Spies also admitted to investigators his involvement in the robbery.

Steele was arrested for Robbery-1st Degree and Conspiracy to Commit a Forcible Felony. He was transported to the Linn County Jail.

Spies was arrested for Robbery-1st Degree, Conspiracy to Commit a Forcible Felony, and Carrying Weapons. He was transported to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.
