Inmate serving time for IC armed robbery dies at UIHC after apparent suicide

A prison inmate serving time for an Iowa City armed robbery has died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, 28-year-old Christopher James Rios was pronounced dead due to apparent suicide at approximately 1:50 a.m. Friday morning. He had been transported to the UIHC the previous day due to the seriousness of his injuries from the apparent attempt. Rios was an inmate of the Clarinda Correctional Facility, where the incident took place.

Rios had been serving a 25 year sentence for the crime of 1st Degree Burglary and a 10 year sentence for the crime of 2nd Degree Robbery after he and his roommate used long guns to rob their victim on the 1000 block of East Jefferson Street in 2009. His sentence began on August 17, 2010.
