A Coralville man was taken into custody this week after an alleged domestic assault.

Police say the incident occurred at the Iowa City apartment of the victim around 5:45pm Wednesday. 21-year-old Isaiah Gilkey of Boston Way and the woman were in a verbal altercation about a cellphone that Gilkey was using. The woman asked for the cellphone, and Gilkey allegedly refused to hand it over. When the woman tried to take the phone from Gilkey, he reportedly wrestled the woman to the bed. He’s then accused of getting on top of her and placing both of his hands around her throat before leaving the apartment.

The woman told officers that while Gilkey had his hands around her throat, she had difficulty breathing. She reportedly had visible bruising to both arms, and reddening and scratches to the right side of her neck.

Gilkey was arrested and booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 9pm Wednesday. He’s charged with Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison term of up to two years if convicted.

A no-contact order was requested between the two parties involved.
