An Iowa City man was taken into custody after his alleged involvement in a large fight early Saturday morning.

According to police, an officer observed the incident in the 100 block of South Clinton Street just before 2am. When backup arrived, most of the participants had disbursed, but 19-year-old Trevion Gathright of Sherman Drive reportedly came out of an alley and was throwing punches at an unknown subject, who fled the scene.

Gathright was restrained by friends from following, and allegedly was staggering and slurring his words. He was placed under arrest, and reportedly was observed with bloodshot watery eyes. A post arrest PBT showed a blood-alcohol content of .155 percent. He also was found to have a quantity of marijuana on his person when he was searched.

Gathright was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and second offense marijuana possession. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 14 months in prison.

In April 2020, police stopped Gathright when someone called police about a vehicle he was in reeking of marijuana. A K9 positively alerted to drugs, and Gathright’s backpack reportedly had four bags of marijuana, over five dozen Xanax tablets and drug paraphernalia. When searched in accordance with his arrest, a 40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and brass knuckles were found. Gathright had no permit for either weapon. He was charged with two counts of carrying weapons, a Class D felony charge of controlled substance possession, an Aggravated Misdemeanor charge of controlled substance possession, and failure to affix a tax stamp. He was facing sixteen years in prison if convicted on all counts.

In September, Gathright accepted a plea deal in which one of the weapons charges and two controlled substance violations were dropped. On the other charges, he was given a seven-year suspended sentence and three years of probation. As Saturday’s incident is a parole violation, Gathright could be facing additional time.
