An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after an alleged assault against a woman pregnant with his child.

Police say the incident occurred in Coralville Monday morning at the Boston Way apartment that the woman was visiting. She told 28-year-old Albert Black to leave the premises, but he refused. Black then allegedly backhanded the woman across the face, causing an injury to her bottom lip.

When the woman attempted to call 911 to summon police to the apartment, Black reportedly grabbed the phone from her and eventually threw it across the room, breaking it. The woman suffered an injury to a finger on her right hand that caused bleeding on the knuckle and swelling.

The two have co-habitated within the last year, and she is pregnant with Black’s child. He is accused of Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury against the same woman on Christmas Day. A no-contact order was issued the following day, and he reportedly violated the order last month.

Black was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Assault Causing Injury,Obstruction of Emergency Communications and Violation of a No-Contact Order for Monday’s incident. If convicted on those charges, he could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail.

A hearing on the original contempt charge was to take place Wednesday morning.
