Cedar Rapids Police arrest armed robber

Cedar Rapids police took a man into custody after he allegedly stole a wallet from a vehicle.

Officers got the call at 12:20pm Thursday. Arriving officers were met by the victim on the 1600 block of C Avenue Northwest, who said that a man entered his vehicle and had the victim’s wallet. When confronted by the victim, the suspect allegedly displayed a handgun and fled the scene.

The victim provided a physical description of the suspect, and another witness standing at 18th Street and B Avenue Northwest said that he saw someone matching the description of the suspect running south on 19th Street Northwest.

Officers canvassed the area and found the suspect behind Christ Church Presbyterian on 1st Avenue Northwest. He ran around the front of the building and attempted to hide behind an air conditioning unit but was apprehended without incident.

The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Muzuri Yenge of Cedar Rapids. He’s been charged with 1st degree Robbery and 1st degree Burglary. He was taken to the Linn County Correctional Center.

If convicted on both counts, Yenge could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.
