Ped Mall playground design gets tweaked due to resident input

The City of Iowa City announced Thursday that several changes have been made to the initial redesign of the downtown Ped Mall Playground Concept.

Over 550 people went online and offered suggestions to improve the redo.

Among the changes are added stairs to the tower as well as inside the structure. The city considered a wheelchair-accessible ramp, but due to space limitations and other city playgrounds that feature ramps, that idea was tabled. However, a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round and spin cycle was added due to requests for more motion-based activities on ground level.

The color scheme of the playground was changed from primary colors to one that fits better into the area. And due to the overwhelming approval of the shade design, the city modified it to create more shade for the playground.

A virtual walkthrough is available on line to help residents get a feel of what the new playground will look like when it’s completed. Go to www.icgov.org/ParkProjects for more information.
