University of Iowa Health Care wasted no time once the CDC approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for younger patients.

The Gazette reports that the group expanded its vaccination efforts Thursday and began administering the first dose to the 12-15 age group at its Iowa River Landing location in Coralville.

The clinic continues through Saturday.

In addition, HyVee pharmacies say they’re offering the vaccines to the 12-15 year olds either by walkup or by appointment. Parents or a guardian must accompany the minors. CVS also opened their vaccines to 12-15 year olds by appointment only.

University of Iowa Epidemiologist Jorge Salinas took questions from reporters Thursday, and stressed that the idea of a vaccine inhibiting fertility in younger patients is an urban legend and a lie. Salinas said that COVID vaccines play no role in fertility.

Salinas said that the incidence rate of COVID in Johnson County is currently 7 per 100,000, which means that you would need to interact with 100,000 people to cross paths with 7 people with COVID.

The Gazette reports Salinas gave the OK for people to eat in restaurants, given that most of Johnson County is vaccinated. But he urged people to still use caution.
