An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after allegedly assaulting two people at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Center.

Police say the incident occurred just before 7:40pm Thursday. 19-year-old Malik Yelvington of Catskill Court and another unnamed person were seen assaulting two people, a woman and man. Witnesses on scene stated that Yelvington grabbed the woman and forcibly threw her to the ground, causing her to strike the concrete bike trail, scraping her knee. Her head hit the grass, and the woman reportedly suffered several seizures as the result of the alleged attack.

Arriving officers saw Yelvington and the other person running from the scene. They reportedly ignored commands to stop as police identified themselves. They were apprehended after a short pursuit in a nearby cornfield.

The male victim suffered his injuries at Yelvington’s hand, after Yelvington allegedly hit him in the back of the head, causing him to strike the ground. He suffered a cut to his eyebrow that drew blood.

Yelvington denied being involved in any altercation, but was arrested based on witness reports and the injuries suffered. He’s been charged with two counts of Assault causing Bodily Injury and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts he could be sentenced to 25 months in jail.

The other alleged suspect’s name has yet to be released.
