Iowa City man accused of assault allegedly found with cocaine

An Iowa City man who allegedly sent another man to a hospital after an altercation was charged with assault and drug possession.

A police officer reportedly observed the altercation that took place just before 2 am Sunday in the 100 block of South Clinton Street. One of the men was down on the ground and attempting to stand up, getting help from others to stand, and it appeared that the incident was over. However, 25-year-old Kemonte Brown of East Burlington Street allegedly turned the man around and punched him directly in the face, causing an open cut. The victim ended up being transported to a hospital for treatment.

As for Brown, officers allege that he had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and impaired balance. He reportedly admitted to drinking and had the odor of ingested alcohol coming from him. He refused a post arrest PBT, and a subsequent search allegedly turned up two small baggies with a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine.

Brown was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication, Assault causing Bodily Injury, and Possession of a Controlled Substance, If convicted on all counts, Brown could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
