An Iowa man was taken into custody late Sunday after reportedly being nearly three times over the legal limit to drive.

Police say 21-year-old Connor Ryan of Birmingham was observed driving northbound on Highway 218, crossing the center line and fog line multiple times, swerving in his lane, and traveling well below the speed limit. Ryan reportedly activated his hazard lights and pulled over to the side of the road before the officer activated his emergency lights.

When contact was made, Ryan allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and delayed reactions. He reportedly admitted to drinking prior to driving, and after failing field tests showed a blood-alcohol content of .225 percent on a Datamaster test.

Ryan has been charged with his first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a maximum jail term of up to one year if convicted.
