An Iowa City man faces several charges after allegedly reaching speeds of close to 130 miles per hour during an officer pursuit Sunday afternoon.

Reports of a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 218 at speed of 90 miles an hour or more were broadcast at approximately 1:50 pm. A sheriff’s deputy traveling northbound spotted the vehicle, reportedly driven by 32-year-old Patrick Horras of East College Street. Front-facing radar allegedly clocked the man at a speed of 124 miles an hour in the 65 miles per hour zone.

The deputy turned south and pursued Horras, who was clocked at 128 miles per hour at one point. Emergency lights and sirens were deployed, but Horras reportedly continued at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

After the man’s vehicle, a Toyota Avalon, crashed, Horras allegedly fled from the vehicle. He was eventually identified and a warrant was requested for a blood draw due to his suspected intoxication. Additionally, a probable cause search of the vehicle allegedly turned up a pipe with marijuana residue.

OWI charges are pending, but Horras was charged with Eluding and possession of drug paraphernalia. He’s also been charged with no valid license, speeding at 20 miles over the limit, failure to stop for stop signs, reckless driving, improper passing, and failure to maintain control. The two chargeable offenses at this time carry a jail sentence of up to 25 months if convicted.
