A Coralville man wanted on a theft warrant was taken into custody early Sunday after allegedly threatening a woman with a knife.

Police were dispatched to the Iowa Lodge on the Coralville Strip just before 12:30 am on reports of a homicidal subject. According to reports, 39-year-old Darnell Bonner, a resident at the Lodge, followed a woman to her apartment in the building. He then reportedly began pushing the victim, stating he was going to kill her.

The woman told police that Bonner had a knife in his hand while he was pushing her. He allegedly told her that he was going to catch her outside, and there would be nothing the police could do. Bonner then reportedly went back into his apartment.

When officers arrived, Bonner reportedly refused to come out of his apartment for them. Dispatch notes indicate that he called and stated that he was getting ready to use deadly force. He also allegedly stated that he had a 9 milimeter gun and he was going to shoot officers if they came in.

The woman stated that she believed she would have either been cut or killed by Bonner.

Bonner was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with Assault while Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and 1st degree Harassment. A No-Contact order was requested by the victim.

Later that day, around 8:15 am, officers were dispatched back to the Iowa Lodge. The woman stated that Bonner was outside of her door, threatening to assault and kill her. Bonner was taken back to the Johnson County Jail and charged with another count of 1st degree Harassment.

Bonner was wanted on a warrant stemming from an alleged credit card theft. A customer at the Kum & Go on the Strip told officers on the afternoon of January 7th that he lost his debit card after making a purchase there, then a purchase was made with the card 10 minutes later. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Bonner using the card to purchase alcohol. The customer told police that Bonner returned the card to his brother after using it.

With the Unauthorized use of a Credit Card charge for the January incident, Bonner now faces up to 8 years in prison.

Judge Deborah Minot issued the requested no-contact order on Wednesday.

Court records also indicate that the Iowa Lodge has initiated a suit against Bonner this week in Small Claims Court.
