Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman is calling on witnesses to come forward as they investigate a Friday night shooting.

In a release from the Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Bowling Street Southwest at approximately 6:41p.m. on Friday for a 911 call of shots-fired.  Initial reports indicated an SUV and a black vehicle were involved with occupants exchanging shots.  Police who arrived in the area located shell-casings near the driveway of a business in that block.  Investigation revealed bullets also struck the east side of the Hy-Vee on Wilson Avenue Southwest.  No injuries were reported.

Chief Jerman is asking for witnesses to come forward to help investigators solve this, and all gun-violence cases. In a statement, Jerman said, “We have too many instances of shots-fired in our community go unsolved and that’s largely driven by the fact individuals who saw the incidents refuse to cooperate with investigators.”

The chief goes on to add the incidents are reckless, irresponsible, and put the public at risk. While his department continues to use every resource to solve these crimes, Jerman says that officers cannot be everywhere at once, and cooperation with police would result in a much safer community.
