Iowa City Police say they’re stepping up patrols at Mercer Park after a Monday night shooting.

According to a Tuesday afternoon news release from the ICPD, there are no known threats to the area. But as a precautionary measure, police presence in and around the park will increase while the investigation continues.

An earlier ICPD news release indicates officers responded to a report of an altercation involving about a dozen people at Mercer Park at 7:57 pm. While on the way to the scene, they were advised that witnesses reported multiple shots fired.

Upon arrival, police located evidence corroborating the reports. 21-year-old Marquise Hubbard of Cedar Rapids was reportedly found near the scene in possession of a Palmetto 9mm handgun and over nine grams of marijuana, although there is no indication that he fired the gun during the incident. Hubbard is charged with Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons and Marijuana possession. He could be sentenced to up to two years in jail if convicted.

Anyone with information on the Mercer Park shooting is asked to contact Police at 319-356-5275.
